When people rent a platform

For occasional work at height, renting almost always beats buying. Some common situations:

  • Roofs and coverings

Repairing tiles, gutters, skylights and solar panels without scaffolding.

  • Painting and façades

Exterior painting, façade cleaning, insulation and window replacement.

  • Technical installations

Electrical, HVAC, lighting, cabling and piping in halls and warehouses.

  • Industrial maintenance

Inspections, structure cleaning, overhead cranes and equipment at height.

  • Signage and advertising

Fitting signs, banners, illuminated displays and shop decoration.

  • Events and green spaces

Stage and lighting rigs, tree pruning and garden work.

What renting costs

Indicative prices in Portugal, VAT included, transport excluded. The price depends on height, power (electric or diesel), duration and delivery distance. Always ask two or three companies for a quote.

Which platform type do you need?

Each type suits different work. A quick summary to choose before asking for a quote:

  • Scissor lift

A platform that rises vertically on a scissor mechanism, with a wide basket for two or three people and material. Electric models are for indoors and flat floors (6–14 m); diesel rough-terrain models work outdoors up to about 18 m.

    Examples
Suspended ceilings, lighting and HVAC in warehouses and shops, interior painting, racking installation, façades on new builds.

  • Articulating boom lift

A multi-section articulating boom with a jib that reaches over obstacles and into awkward spots. Electric or diesel, with working heights from 12 to 45 m and a basket for one or two people.

    Examples
Roof and gutter repairs, façade painting, industrial structure maintenance, tree pruning, signage.

  • Telescopic boom lift

A straight telescopic boom with long horizontal and vertical reach from a single set-up point. Usually diesel, rough terrain, with working heights of 20 to 40 m or more.

    Examples
Steel structures and industrial halls, bridges and viaducts, shipyards, towers and large industrial façades.

  • Vertical / mast lift

A compact single-person vertical mast platform, electric and quiet, that fits through standard doors and into lifts. Working heights of 6 to 12 m.

    Examples
Maintenance in offices, hotels and shopping centres, lamp replacement, high-level picking, cleaning.

  • Truck / van-mounted platform

A platform mounted on a truck or van that drives to the site by road with no special transport; many can be driven on a car licence. Heights of 12 to 25 m, with outriggers.

    Examples
Street lighting, roadside tree work, spot repairs at several addresses in one day, sign installation.

  • Spider / tracked platform

A narrow, light articulating platform on tracks and outriggers that passes through doors and climbs ramps and stairs, for work on fragile floors or in hard-to-reach places. Heights of 15 to 40 m.

    Examples
Church and atrium interiors, gardens and courtyards, timber or stone floors, façades with tight access.

  • Telehandler

Telehandler: a machine with an extending boom that lifts loads with forks, a bucket or an approved work basket. Not a platform as such, but many rental companies list it in their lifting range.

    Examples
Moving pallets on site, placing materials on upper floors, agriculture, assembly work with a basket.

  • Moving / material lift

An exterior lift for raising or lowering furniture and materials alongside a façade, usually with an operator. It carries goods, not people.

    Examples
Moving through windows and balconies, handling bulky furniture and lifting building materials.

  • Mast-climbing work platform

A work platform guided by one or more fixed masts for access along a building façade. Installation and configuration depend on the building.

    Examples
Extended façade work, cladding, masonry and building refurbishment.

  • Suspended platform

A cable-suspended work platform for access to the outside of buildings. Confirm installation and operation with the supplier.

    Examples
Façade painting and repairs, exterior cleaning and building maintenance.

Frequently asked questions about platform rental

Do I need training to operate an aerial platform?

Yes. Portuguese law (Decree-Law 50/2005) requires operators to be properly trained. Most rental companies ask for an operator certificate (IPAF, for example) or offer training; some rent the machine with an operator included.

Rent or buy an aerial platform?

For occasional jobs or a few weeks a year, renting is cheaper and avoids maintenance, inspection and transport costs. From roughly 100 to 150 days of use a year, buying — new or used — usually pays off. Trapézio de Prismas can help you run the numbers.

Which platform should I choose for work at height?

Indoors on flat floors up to 12–14 m, an electric scissor lift; to reach over obstacles, an articulating boom; for great height and outreach, a telescopic boom; for difficult access or fragile floors, a spider lift; for quick jobs on public roads, a truck-mounted platform.

What is included in the rental price?

Usually the machine, basic insurance and maintenance. Delivery and collection, fuel, the operator and the deposit are charged separately. Always confirm what the quote includes and the conditions in case of breakdown.
