When people rent scaffolding

Whenever work at height takes time, involves several people or heavy materials, scaffolding is the safest and most economical answer. Some common cases:

  • Façade renovation

    Rendering, painting, external insulation (ETICS) and window replacement on buildings.

  • Roofs and coverings

    Roof replacement, eaves and gutters, with guardrails and protective netting.

  • New construction

    Masonry, concrete and exterior finishes throughout the build.

  • Industrial maintenance

    Access to silos, piping, overhead cranes and structures in plants.

  • Interiors and high ceilings

    Mobile aluminium towers for painting, ceilings, lighting and installations.

  • Events and monuments

    Structures for stages and screens, and scaffolding for restoring churches and listed buildings.

What scaffolding rental costs

Indicative prices in Portugal. Façade scaffolding is priced per square metre of covered façade per month, with erection, dismantling and transport charged separately: a 250 m² façade for one month comes to €9–15 per m² all in. Always ask two or three companies for a quote.

Erection requires certified scaffolders and, on public roads, an occupation permit from the municipality. Transport (≈ €2/m², or €70 up to 20 km for small hires) and a deposit are charged separately; netting, ladders and loading bays may be extras. Which scaffold type do you need?

Each type suits different work. A quick summary to choose before asking for a quote:

  • Façade scaffolding

    Prefabricated steel frames erected along the façade, with 0.7–1 m wide decks, guardrails and internal ladders. The most economical system for regular façades up to about 30 m.

    Examples
    Painting and rendering, external wall insulation (ETICS), window replacement, roof and eaves repairs.

  • Modular / multidirectional

    Tube-and-rosette modular system (Layher Allround or Catari US type) that adapts to irregular shapes, great heights and heavy loads. Pricier per m², but it handles what frame scaffolding cannot.

    Examples
    Churches and monuments, plants and refineries, temporary roofs, stage and screen structures, site access stairs.

  • Mobile aluminium tower

    Light aluminium tower on wheels, assembled by the user in minutes, for working heights up to about 12 m on flat floors. Rented by the day or week, no erection service.

    Examples
    Ceiling painting, suspended ceilings, lighting and HVAC installation, warehouse and shop maintenance, cleaning at height.

  • Cradle / suspended platform

    Platform hung from the roof on cables, moving up and down the façade without occupying the pavement. Quick to install and ideal for tall buildings with light interventions.

    Examples
    Window and façade cleaning, painting of towers and tall buildings, spot repairs of cladding, façade inspections.

  • Mast-climbing platform

    Platform climbing a mast anchored to the façade, with high load capacity (often over 1,000 kg) and up to 30 m wide. For heavy, long-running work at height with less pavement occupation than scaffolding.

    Examples
    ETICS and ventilated façades on tall buildings, stone or panel cladding, full-façade window replacement.

  • Shoring / falsework

    Steel props, load towers and falsework that support slabs, beams and formwork during concreting, or structures during strengthening. Rented per unit or per project, often together with formwork.

    Examples
    New reinforced-concrete construction, structural strengthening, bridges and civil works, trench shoring.

Frequently asked questions about scaffolding rental

Can I erect the scaffold myself?

Façade and modular scaffolds must be erected by trained scaffolders following the manufacturer's manual and EN 12811, and inspected before each use (Decree-Law 50/2005). That is why most companies rent with assembly included. Low mobile aluminium towers can be assembled by the user following the instructions.

Do I need a permit to put scaffolding on the street?

Yes. Whenever the scaffold occupies a pavement or public road you need a public-space occupation permit from the municipality, usually requested by the contractor or the scaffolding company, with signage and pedestrian protection.

How is façade scaffolding priced?

By the covered façade area (width × height) in square metres times a monthly rate, plus a fixed erection and dismantling fee per square metre and transport. Protective netting, guardrails, ladders and loading bays may be charged as extras.

Scaffolding or an aerial platform?

For continuous work across a whole façade, with several workers and materials, scaffolding pays off. For quick, one-off jobs or work at several separate points, an aerial platform is cheaper and faster to mobilise. See also our aerial platform rental directory.
